Kapolei is quickly becoming the second urban center of Oahu and is the fastest growing city in the state. Kapolei offers a dynamic, carefully planned community and serves as the region’s epicenter for business, government, shopping, dining, and entertainment.
LOCATION. Kapolei is located at the southern end of the slopes of the Wai?anae mountain near the neighborhood of Makakilo and borders Ewa Beach. It is located on the ?Ewa Plain approximately 25 miles from Honolulu. The H-1 highway divides more recently developed Kapolei from Makakilo. Traveling eastward on H-1 connects Kapolei to Ewa Beach and then Waipahu ; heading westward leads to Ko Olina and Waianae.
FUN FACTS. The community takes its name from a volcanic cone , Pu? u o Kapolei . In the Hawaiian language , pu? u means “hill” and Kapo lei means “beloved Kapo”. According to legend, Kapo , Goddess of Fertility was sister to Pele , Goddess of Fire. Geographically, much of the land is part of the estate of industrialist James Campbell . Kapolei sits primarily upon former sugarcane and pineapple fields.
SHOPPING. The choices for your “retail therapy” and conveniences are expansive. From Target, Ross, and TJ MAXX to Petco, Officemax, and Down To Earth to Safeway, Foodland, and Longs, Kapolei has everything to meet your needs.
In addition, Ka Makana Ali’i mall, the newest jewel of the area, opened in the fall of 2016, featuring exciting stores, restaurants, Consolidated Theaters, and Hampton Inn and Suites. The center’s name Ka Makana Ali’i means “The Royal Gift” and pays tribute to Prince Jonah K?hi? Kalaniana’ole.
ATTRACTIONS.
- Aloun Farms’ mission is to provide locally grown, high quality produce at a comparable price to Hawaii’s people. Their annual Pumpkin Festival features pumpkins, sunflowers, sweet corn, and green beans.
- Wet ‘n Wild Hawaii features 25 water based rides and attractions.
- Barber’s Point Beach is a small scenic beach with lighthouse.
COLLEGES. The University of Hawaii–West Oahu relocated to Kapolei and opened its new campus in August, 2012; Hawaii Tokai International College relocated to Kapolei in April, 2015. Both schools offer an excellent alternative to a commute to Honolulu.
